What is the MonaLisa Touch procedure ?

MonaLisa Touch is a new type of therapeutic treatment for conditions associated with vulvo-vaginal atrophy. MonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO2 laser with vaginal probe that delivers targeted electrical impulses to the vaginal tissue (mucosa) to revitalize the cells, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. It also increases vascularization and hydration levels in this way. There is also a vulvar probe that delivers electrical impulses in the vulvar area.

The laser treatment takes only minutes to perform and stimulates collagen production in the soft tissues.

The process stimulates soft tissue regeneration, which results in:

  • Vaginal tissue tightening and elasticity
  • Increased lubrication
  • Enhanced blood flow
  • Improved pH levels

The procedure reactivates some of the processes that the vagina previously performed. Women often report improved sexual function and fewer urinary symptoms after having the treatment.

Who is the MonaLisa Touch for?

Women experiencing gynecologic concerns, i.e. vaginal atrophy.

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy, or atrophic vaginitis, is a condition caused by declining levels of estrogen. Estrogen drops after menopause or a hysterectomy causing the soft tissues of the vagina to thin, dry out, and become inflamed. Some of the symptoms associated with vaginal atrophy include:

  • Vaginal irritation such as itching and burning
  • Decreased lubrication
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Vaginal dryness

Vaginal atrophy may cause a number of uncomfortable vaginal and urinary symptoms, particularly during sex. Although estrogen decline is natural, we can help you find relief so you can enjoy intercourse again and improve quality of life in general.

What are the benefits?

The in-office procedure is virtually painless, and typically lasts about 5 minutes and requires no anesthesia.

The MonaLisa Touch laser is an effective non-surgical, drug-free treatment for vaginal rejuvenation. It’s a great option for women who want to improve their vaginal health without hormone medication or more invasive processes. The treatment is also great for on-the-go women who wish to avoid taking any downtime from their busy schedules. You may have to abstain from sex for a few days, but you don’t have to make any other adjustments to your routine.

MonaLisa Touch results

The results of the MonaLisa Touch are also long lasting. After three treatments, spaced about six weeks apart, you should only need maintenance treatments once per year.

The treatment performed in the doctor’s office is almost painless, does not require anesthesia, and is mostly performed in less than 5 minutes.

For treatment of the vagina, an average of three 5-minute sessions at 6-week intervals is required. For treatment of the vulva, five 5-minute sessions at 6-week intervals are generally recommended.

Most MonaLisa Touch patients feel an abatement of discomfort immediately with the first session, even if the treatment requires three 5-minute sessions spread over a total period of 12 weeks.

After the initial treatment, patients should come in annually for a booster treatment. Your doctor will determine with you the timing of the follow-up treatments.

Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure, although sexual intercourse should be avoided for 2-3 days. Your doctor will provide you with recommendations on proper behavior after the treatment.

MonaLisa Touch is suitable for any menopausal woman, as well as for those suffering from postmenopausal symptoms as a result of hysterectomy or breast cancer treatment.
